From the first daring takeoffs to the advent of commercial flights, Breitling’s history is closely linked to that of aviation. In the 1930s, Breitling’s Huit Aviation department made a name for itself by inventing precision clocks for use in cockpits. Two decades later, the brand introduced another flight instrument, this time a novelty to be worn on the wrist: the Ref. 765 AVI. This pioneering pilot’s watch provided the technical backdrop for today’s Super AVI, a collection inspired by the adventurous spirit of the first famous aircraft.
The Super AVI Mosquito pays tribute to one such legend. In an era of shortages of aluminium and steel, the engineers behind the de Havilland Mosquito exploited a resource that was particularly abundant at the time: wood. The “wooden wonder” caused a stir when it outperformed its metal contemporaries to become one of the fastest aircraft built between 1940 and 1950. With unrivalled manoeuvrability, the aircraft was capable of a wide range of missions and could serve as a light bomber, transport aircraft and photo reconnaissance aircraft. This Super AVI Mosquito is inspired by the Night Fighter 2, an all-black two-seater designed to fly stealthily through the night sky.
This Super AVI Mosquito is a true pilot's watch, designed to withstand the demands of a vintage cockpit. Its large Arabic numerals provide excellent readability on the dial and bezel.
The entire black ceramic case contrasts strikingly with the titanium pushers, crown, caseback, and buckle. The knurled bezel ensures optimum grip, even for a pilot’s gloved hands. The military leather strap nods to classic flight gear. Pilots and other travelers will appreciate the ability to read a second time zone thanks to the white-tipped GMT hand, as well as the 24-hour graduation on the flange. The Super AVI is powered by a COSC-certified Breitling Manufacture Caliber B04 movement, which guarantees a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.
